Ever feel like your brain never truly switches off, leaving you exhausted even after a full night in bed? Long before sleep laboratories mapped circadian rhythms, autonomic nervous system regulation and melatonin cycles, Islamic tradition described a precise, bio-harmonious nighttime routine.
Here is how those prophetic practices line up with what modern physiology now measures — how they calm your nervous system, protect your spine and heart, and restore your energy.
1. Sleeping on your right side — the cardiac and nervous system reset
The tradition. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised sleeping on the right lateral side after the evening routine: "Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, and lie on your right side." — Sahih Muslim (2710)
The backed science.
- Lower sympathetic stress. Cardiology studies using spectral heart rate variability find that the right lateral position increases vagal nerve activity — your "rest and digest" branch — while measurably reducing sympathetic (fight-or-flight) drive.
- Less cardiac pressure. The heart sits slightly left in the thoracic cavity. Lying on the right keeps the weight of the lungs and mediastinum off it, supporting stroke volume and a lower resting blood pressure.
- Better gastric emptying. The stomach's natural curvature means food and gastric juices settle away from the oesophageal opening on the right side, reducing night-time acid reflux and supporting digestion while you sleep.
2. Why stomach sleeping disrupts your body's healing
The tradition. Seeing someone sleeping prone, face-down, the Prophet ﷺ gently corrected the position, noting that it is a disliked way to lie. — Sunan At-Tirmidhi (2768)
The backed science.
- Respiratory compression. Face-down sleeping loads the ribcage and diaphragm against the mattress, so the intercostal muscles must work harder through the night to draw air into the lungs.
- Cervical and lumbar strain. To breathe while prone, the neck stays rotated close to 90 degrees for hours. That sustains load on the cervical vertebrae and flattens the natural lumbar curve — a recognised contributor to morning stiffness and tension headaches.
3. Dark rooms and early bedtimes — unlocking your melatonin shield
The tradition. "And made your sleep [a means for] rest, and made the night as clothing." — Quran (An-Naba 78:9–10). And practically: "Put out lamps when you go to bed…" — Sahih al-Bukhari (5301)
The backed science.
- Pineal gland activation. Darkness triggers the pineal gland to synthesise melatonin — the hormone behind immune cell repair, cellular clean-up and deep non-REM sleep. Blue light and overhead lighting suppress that release and delay circadian clock gene expression.
- Early-night slow-wave sleep. The densest slow-wave sleep, where most physical recovery happens, falls in the early hours of the night, broadly between 10pm and 2am. Retiring shortly after Isha places your sleep over that repair window instead of missing it.
4. Nightly wudu and dusting the bed — thermal cooling and an allergen shield
The tradition. Performing wudu and brushing down the bedding before lying down is a recommended prophetic habit (Sahih Muslim 2710 and 271).
The backed science.
- Core temperature drop. Sleep onset requires core body temperature to fall by roughly 1°C. Washing the face, hands, arms and feet with cool water increases peripheral blood flow and evaporative heat loss, accelerating that physiological cooling.
- Micro-allergen control. Clearing the bed surface removes dust mites, shed skin and settled environmental allergens that irritate airways — reducing nocturnal airway resistance and morning facial puffiness.
5. The power nap (qailulah) — clearing brain adenosine
The tradition. A brief midday rest is a cherished practice, encouraged as its own form of renewal.
The backed science.
- Adenosine flush. Adenosine accumulates through the waking day and creates "sleep pressure." A 10–20 minute nap clears enough of it to restore focus, executive function and working memory without tipping you into deep sleep and grogginess (sleep inertia).
- Cortisol and cardiovascular relief. Regular short midday rests are associated with lower circulating cortisol and steadier arterial blood pressure across the afternoon.

Right lateral sleeping is associated with greater parasympathetic (vagal) modulation and reduced sympathetic activity compared with the left lateral position.
